How to Subscribe to Media-L media literacy education listserv
How to Unsubscribe

The Media-L listserv, hosted on a server at New Mexico State University and sponsored by the Southern New Mexico Media Awareness Council, is open to teachers, education administrators, media professionals, researchers and anyone else with an active interest and involvement in issues related to media literacy.

The list has subscribers from all over the world and many widely known media literacy experts, researchers, and teachers are on the list. The major focus of the list is to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and information related to a broad scope of media literacy subjects, activities, research and teaching.

The quantity of emails typically ranges from 3 to 10 per day (you can get them combined into one email, called "digest format." See below.) When something big is in the news, the number will increase. The emails are usually:

  • Announcements about articles, events and resources of interest to teachers and others interested in media literacy.
  • Questions from teachers seeking help -- ideas for class activities, requests for advice about whether a particular resource is good for a certain age group, etc.
  • An exchange of views about anything that someone may choose to bring up.

Media-L is not a "moderated" listserv, which means that no one reviews the messages before they are posted. It is run by a software program called "Mailman."

How to subscribe to the Media-L listserve

To subscribe to the Media-L list, click here to go to the subscription page. There, you will see a section that will allow you to subscribe to the list. Type your email address and a password. The password you select should be only for this mailing list.

Once you have filled in the information requested in the "Subscribing" section, click on the "Subscribe" button. Mailman will send an email message to your email address. The message that you receive will ask you to confirm your subscription request. This helps to prevent other people from adding you to a list without your permission. When you receive the confirmation request, simply reply to the message. You do not have to add any additional text and you should not modify the subject line.

After successfully subscribing to the list, Mailman should send you a welcome message. The message will include the URL that will direct you to the list's information page, a URL that will direct you to your personal settings page, and your list password. You should keep the welcome message for future reference.

To "post" messages to the list, send your message to this address: Media-L@nmsu.edu. Messages sent to this address by subscribers to the list are immediately sent out to all subscribers to the list. You must send the message from the e-mail address you used to subscribe to the list.

Digest format
Some people prefer to get their mail from the list in "digest" form. This means that instead of Mailman sending each post to you as it comes in (i.e., one at a time), the list holds all messages posted each day and sends them out to you in a single e-mail containing all the messages. (At the top will be a summary list with the Subject and Sender of each message.) To get messages in Digest mode, select "Yes" when asked on the subscription page.

How to unsubscribe (leave the list for good):

  • Click here to go to the subscribe/unsubscribe page.
  • Under the list's Subscribers section you will see an "Unsubscribe or edit options" button at the bottom of the page. Here, you can enter your email address and click on the button.
  • This will take you to the list's "Member Options Login Page" page where you can unsubscribe by clicking the "Unsubscribe" button near the bottom of the page. By clicking on the Unsubscribe button, a confirmation message will be emailed to you. This message will have a link that you should click on to complete the removal process (you can also confirm by email; see the instructions in the confirmation message).
